Earning Muslimly: Kesb Literature in Islamic Economic History Workshop
The books on kesb, which deal with issues related to the production activities and working lives of Muslims at both individual and social levels, constitute a rich genre of literature contributed by many different scholars. The works presented in this literature, the first example of which is Imam Muhammad al-Shaybānī’s Kitāb al-Kasb, examine topics such as the Sharī‘ah ruling and significance of earning a livelihood, the professions of the Prophets (peace be upon them), the types and hierarchy of economic activity, the relationship between reliance on Allah (tawakkul) and working, the connection between earning a livelihood and the continuity of the world, wealth and poverty, the importance of gratitude for wealth and patience in poverty, the categories and degrees of needs, wealth accumulation, the interaction between professional and religious life, division of labor, expenditure, consumption, and wastefulness.
The workshop aims to examine the kesb literature, which constitutes one of the most important lines of classical scholarship on economic issues, through four different works. In this context, the workshop includes a systematic examination of the works of scholars who contributed to the literature on kesb, which is an important source of economic thought as well as a practical issue, through their different specializations such as fiqh, hadith, and adab.
