The İSAR Law and Economics Workshop Series is set to explore the issue of "Money," one of the most deep-rooted yet contemporary institutions of social life. Beyond serving as a mere medium of exchange, money is defined as a "social technology" that integrates law, trust, and economic coordination. This workshop aims to examine this concept through a multi-layered perspective.

The workshop will be structured around three main themes. In the first session, Şevket Pamuk will discuss the role of Ottoman monetary institutions within the imperial structure, exploring how past societies constructed and managed their monetary systems. Following this, Şükrü Özen will analyze the conceptualization of money as a standard of value in classical Islamic law.

The second session will focus on the complexities of today’s financial landscape. Mohamad Hammour will discuss the credit money system, while Mehmet Fatih Ulu will examine currency choices in financing and invoicing through the lens of economic behavior. In the final section, which addresses the social and political foundations of money alongside its role in an increasingly digital world, Jakob Feinig will evaluate the socio-political foundations of money based on Max Weber’s theories. Lastly, Bilal Bağış will share his insights regarding the potential impacts of digital currencies on financial efficiency.
