OTTOLEGAL: The Formation of Ottoman Law
OTTOLEGAL is a project supported by the European Research Council (ERC) that examines the formation of legal norms in the Ottoman Empire during the early modern period. By analyzing the laws of the sultans (kanun) and the fatwas of scholars (ulama), the project aims to reveal the participation and interaction of various groups in the law-making process.
Within this framework, the project seeks to shed light on the hybridity of Ottoman law, moving beyond the well-known roles of actors like sultans and scholars in the formation of legal norms. It aims to achieve a better understanding of the roles of other, less-recognized actors with specific interests, such as local groups, non-Muslim communities, ordinary people, founders of endowments (waqf), merchants, and guilds.
