Continuing our ISAR Thesis Presentations series, in our next session, we will host Muaz Alemdar to discuss his Master’s thesis titled "The Concept of Attribution in Roderick Chisholm and the Evolution of Language."

In his thesis, Muaz Alemdar addresses the issue of the reference of names in the philosophy of Roderick Chisholm. For Chisholm, the reference of names is understood through a concept that distinguishes itself from the mainstream analytic tradition: intentionality. Inspired by Brentano, Chisholm incorporates this concept into his own philosophy of language, grounding the reference of names not within language itself, but in an intentional subject. He explains the process by which a subject directs itself toward an object and ascribes properties to it—prior to the act of naming—through the concept of attribution (isnat). In his presentation, Muaz Alemdar will explore the relationship between this concept and contemporary studies on the evolution of language, investigating the foundational grounds upon which language may have emerged.
