Postcolonial Theory

Summary

This course attempts to analyze and understand some of the philosophical, political and historical debates defined as Postcolonial theory.  These debates will be taken together with debates within social theory and positioned in the course of the 20th century, especially in terms of colonial relations. These debates will focus on west-east relations, critical theory and orientalism as central debates. In this context, the following four main problems will be tried to be understood and solved together with postcolonial debates:

  • Belonging, discourse and representation
  • Historiography, political history and sense-making
  • Colonies and colonial relations
  • Colonial and anticolonial discourse

The course will consist of lectures, intensive reading and discussion. Participants are required to do the assigned readings in an organized manner. The topics are as follows:

  • Belongings; History, Civilization Experience 
  • Encounters; Discussions on Civilization and Culture
  • Postcolonial Grounds and Sources; Colonialism and Eurocentrism
  • Postcoloniality, Postcolonial History and Theory
  • Postcolonial Image; Orientalism and its Critique
  • Postcolonial Representation; Criticism and Critiques
  • Anticolonial Discourse; Different Regions and Experiences

Sessions will be held in Turkish but English is required for participation.
