Summary
Launched in 2018 as a reading group, the Muslim Economic Thought Working Group is an important academic initiative that aims to understand the basic principles of Islam in the field of economics and to examine how these principles are addressed in traditional literature. The group’s work is based on an in-depth study and analysis of important works from the classical period of Islamic economics.
The main aim of the group is to investigate how the classical works that set out Islamic economic principles, especially the texts written in separate types of literature on Islamic economics such as kesb, harāj, and hisbah, can be reconciled with contemporary understanding. The 20th century’s global changes and socioeconomic transformations and how they are reflected in the discipline of Islamic economics are also at the center of the group’s work. In this context, the aim of the working group is not limited to reading texts, but to build a bridge between contemporary Islamic economics and classical scholarship.
